Why Mums Feel Exhausted Even with Normal Blood Tests
We see a lot of wonderful mothers in clinic who present depleted and exhausted, yet their pathology results are 'normal'.
Standard blood tests assess basic markers: haemoglobin, ferritin, B12, thyroid function, and fasting glucose. When these come back normal, women are often told their fatigue is psychological or simply part of motherhood. This misses significant physiological realities that exist outside conventional testing parameters.
The problem begins with reference ranges. Pathology reference ranges are derived from average healthy populations and assume static nutritional needs. They do not account for the profound changes in nutritional demands during pregnancy, lactation, and the postpartum period. A ferritin level of 30 ng/mL sits within the "normal" range, yet this same level represents severely depleted functional iron stores in a lactating woman whose physiological needs have doubled.
